Seven & i to Slash 3,000 Jobs in Japan

Tokyo, Oct. 10 (Jiji Press)--Japanese retail giant Seven & i Holdings Co. <3382> said Thursday that it will reduce its domestic group workforce by some 3,000.

As part of structural reform in the group's sluggish supermarket and department store operations, 1,700 jobs will be slashed at Ito-Yokado Co. and 1,300 at Sogo & Seibu Co. by the end of February 2023,

As early as August next year, the Seibu department stores in Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture, central Japan, and Otsu in the western prefecture of Shiga, the Sogo Seishin department store in Kobe in the western prefecture of Hyogo and the Sogo store in the western city of Tokushima will be closed altogether.

The Sogo store in Kawaguchi in Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo, is set to be shut in February 2021.

Sales floors will be reduced at the Seibu stores in the northeastern city of Akita and the central city of Fukui.
