Number of Seven-Eleven Japan Stores Logs 1st Drop in 5 Yrs

Tokyo, Oct. 11 (Jiji Press)--The number of domestic convenience stores of Seven-Eleven Japan Co. decreased month on month in September for the first time in five years, it was learned Friday.

The figure dropped by 24 to stand at 20,993 as of the end of September.

The company apparently faces a turning point in its road of expansion, with fewer new store openings amid rising labor costs.

The unit of Seven & i Holdings Co. <3382> has grown by opening a large number of stores.

Until just a few years ago, Seven-Eleven Japan had been launching more than 1,000 new stores annually on a net basis.
