INTERVIEW: Mizuho Aims to Become Leader in Startup Support

Tokyo, Oct. 16 (Jiji Press)--Mizuho Bank aims to become a leading company in terms of startup support, Koji Fujiwara, president and chief executive officer of the Japanese lender, said.

In a recent interview, Fujiwara emphasized the importance of providing support to startups, which create new business models.

He said Japanese industry needs to be revamped to ensure sustainable economic growth. "The keyword is to renew (industry)," he said.

According to Mizuho, it currently does business with 2,400 of 8,000 Japanese startups. Its support for them includes arranging business meetings with large companies.

The Mizuho Financial Group Inc. <8411> unit plans to focus more on aid to companies that are close to going public. "Our support is going to cover all stages" from founding to post-public offering, Fujiwara said.
