Tokyo, Oct. 16 (Jiji Press)--The Japanese conglomerate Mitsubishi group said Wednesday it has set up an entity to fund educational programs to develop next-generation human resources.

The Mitsubishi Memorial Foundation for Educational Excellence was established as 2020 marks the 150th anniversary of the launch of the 27-company group's original shipping business by Yataro Iwasaki.

Eligible for the 10-billion-yen funding for 20 years from April next year will be programs designed by schools, nonprofit organizations and companies to help students at junior high and high schools and universities develop abilities to find challenges and seek solutions on their own or talents that are unique and outstanding.

"We'd like to support efforts to change existing knowledge-oriented education," said Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. <8306> Chairman Nobuyuki Hirano, who was appointed president of the foundation.

"We'd like to improve Japan's educational level so we can see more Japanese people win Nobel Prizes," he said.
