Japan White Goods Shipments Hit 23-Year-High in April-Sept.
Tokyo, Oct. 24 (Jiji Press)--The value of white goods shipments in Japan hit a 23-year-high in April-September as demand increased ahead of the Oct. 1 consumption tax hike from 8 pct to 10 pct, an industry group said Thursday.
White goods shipments grew 5.5 pct from a year before to 1,380.1 billion yen, the Japan Electrical Manufacturers' Association said.
The growth was led by air conditioners and washing machines, whose shipments climbed about 30 pct in September from a year earlier.
In April-September, air conditioner shipments rose 4.6 pct to 515.4 billion yen. In volume, shipments went up 2.7 pct to 6.31 million units. Scorching heat after the rainy season contributed to the robust shipments.
Shipments of washing machines jumped 16.8 pct to 199 billion yen in value and grew 9.9 pct in volume. Large-capacity models with drying functions attracted strong demand from dual-income families.
