Kono Apologizes for Gaffe, Just after Haguida
Tokyo, Oct. 29 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Defense Minister Taro Kono apologized Tuesday for an overnight remark related to a series of typhoons that have caused severe damage across the country this year.
Only on Monday, education minister Koichi Hagiuda apologized for his recent gaffe over the planned use of private-sector English tests for nationwide university entrance examinations.
During a fund-raising party Monday, Kono said, "I used to be called a 'rain man' in my constituency...Since I became defense minister (in September) we've already seen three typhoons."
At a House of Councillors committee meeting Tuesday, Kono said, "I want to apologize to those who felt discomfort" over his remark.
Kono insisted that he wanted to highlight the need to improve the treatment of Self-Defense Forces members engaged in disaster relief operations.
