2020 Olympic Marathons, Race Walks to Be Held in Sapporo
Tokyo, Nov. 1 (Jiji Press)--The International Olympic Committee, the Tokyo metropolitan government, the Tokyo Games organizing committee and the Japanese government reached a decision on Friday to move the 2020 Games' marathon and race walk events to Sapporo in the northernmost Japan prefecture of Hokkaido from the capital.
"I can't agree (on the venue change), but I wouldn't block the IOC's decision," Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike said, adding that the latest move was a "decision without consent."
John Coates, chairman of the IOC's Coordination Commission for the 2020 Games, said that the metropolitan government will not have to shoulder any costs related to the venue change.
The representatives from the IOC, the Tokyo Games organizing committee and the central and Tokyo metropolitan governments also decided not to change the venues of other 2020 Games events.
