Taipei, Nov. 6 (Jiji Press)--East Japan Railway Co. <9020>, or JR East, said Wednesday it will open a luxury hotel in Taipei in early 2021.

Hotel Metropolitan Premier Taipei will be the Tokyo-based railway operator's first hotel outside Japan. It will have 288 guestrooms, mainly targeting tourists and business people from Japan.

The new hotel will use a building with 15 floors aboveground and six underground in central Taipei that JR East plans to lease from Cathay Life Insurance Co.

The hotel aims to receive a five-star rating and achieve annual sales of over one billion New Taiwan dollars in five years. It will be run by a joint venture to be set up by a Taiwanese unit of JR East, JR East subsidiary Nippon Hotel Co. and a Taiwanese company.

"We hope to achieve success in Taiwan by providing services full of hospitality, utilizing our know-how in Japan," Nippon Hotel Chief Executive Officer Masayuki Satomi said at a press conference in Taipei.
