Toshiba to Nearly Triple Number of AI Engineers

Tokyo, Nov. 7 (Jiji Press)--Japanese electronics giant Toshiba Corp. <6502> said Thursday that it will raise the number of its artificial intelligence engineers by threefold to about 2,000 by fiscal 2022 on a group basis from some 750 at present.
The company, which aims to accelerate AI-related research and development in the hope of better utilizing big data, has developed an educational program to foster AI experts, jointly with the University of Tokyo's Graduate School of Information Science and Technology.
About 350 Toshiba group employees are expected to study AI using the program, while 700 employees will take a separate in-house AI training course. The company will also hire 200 new graduates and mid-career workers in the AI field.
Other major electronics makers are also speeding up efforts to secure experts in state-of-the-art technologies. Hitachi Ltd. <6501> plans to increase the number of digital technology experts at its R&D group by 60 pct from fiscal 2018 to 2,000 by fiscal 2021.
