Japan to Move Up Osaka World Expo Opening to Mid-April 2025

Tokyo, Nov. 19 (Jiji Press)--The Japanese government is considering moving up the opening of the 2025 World Exposition in Osaka to mid-April from May 3, officials have said.

As a result, the closing of the 180-day event would be moved to mid-October from Nov. 3.

The government has judged that the Expo should not be opened during the busy Golden Week holiday period between late April and early May, according to the officials.

Government representatives gained approval of the idea of changing the Expo schedule at a meeting of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's Osaka Expo task force Monday.

The government is expected to adopt an application including the new schedule at a cabinet meeting in December. It hopes the application will be approved at a general meeting of the Bureau International des Expositions, or BIE, in June 2020.
