Rakuten Smartphone Payment Service Down Again

Tokyo, Nov. 25 (Jiji Press)--Rakuten Inc.'s <4755> Rakuten Pay smartphone payment service became temporarily unavailable Monday, following a similar incident two days earlier.

Monday's service outage is believed to have been triggered by an influx of unsettled transaction data piled up due to the outage on Saturday, which disrupted the payment network.

The cybermall operator's Rakuten Card credit card service, which has some 18 million users, also had glitches through Monday.

The string of service suspensions are feared to dent consumer confidence in the Rakuten brand, potentially causing an outflow of customers.

The Rakuten Pay service was unavailable between around 9:30 a.m. Monday (12:30 a.m. GMT) and 2 p.m. Saturday's suspension began in the morning and lasted until around 2:30 p.m.
