Evacuation Drill Held near Genkai N-Plant in Southwestern Japan
Karatsu, Saga Pref., Nov. 30 (Jiji Press)--A nuclear disaster exercise was held near the Genkai nuclear power plant in Saga Prefecture, southwestern Japan, on Saturday to better prepare for a possible severe accident at the plant.
The Ise helicopter destroyer of the Martine Self-Defense Force joined the exercise, in the first such involvement of a helicopter destroyer, evacuating local residents of a remote island in Karatsu in the prefecture by helicopter to the vessel.
As of 2018, some 18,000 people lived on 17 remote islands within 30 kilometers of the Genkai plant, operated by Kyushu Electric Power Co. <9508>.
The disaster drill, based on a scenario of a severe accident at the Genkai plant's No. 4 reactor, was joined by some 3,000 residents from Saga and the neighboring Fukuoka and Nagasaki prefectures.
On the remote island of Iki in Nagasaki, residents joined a drill to take refuge in Fukuoka by helicopter or high-speed boat.
