Mos Food to Introduce Full Self-Checkout System

Tokyo, Dec. 3 (Jiji Press)--Mos Food Services Inc. <8153> will introduce a full self-checkout machine that accepts both orders and payments on a trial basis.

The move, announced on Monday, is aimed at improving operational efficiency at the firm's Mos Burger restaurants amid a severe labor shortage.

The Japanese hamburger chain said that it would install the machine at two outlets--one in Tokyo and the other in Yokohama, the capital of neighboring Kanagawa Prefecture--this month. A total of some 20 restaurants will have the machine by around March 2020.

Using the machine with a touchscreen, customers will select items they want to buy, place orders and make payments. They will receive the items after payments. The machine can be used for both eat-in and takeout services.

The company has already introduced a type of self-checkout machines accepting only payments at some 80 restaurants.
