Test of Sniffer Dogs Held in Tokyo Station

Tokyo, Dec. 4 (Jiji Press)--Japan's transport ministry conducted a test to introduce detection dogs to sniff out dangerous materials carried by train passengers, at Tokyo Station on Wednesday, ahead of the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics in the Japanese capital.

The introduction of detection dogs is being considered as a measure to fight terrorism at major stations in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

But the trial highlighted problems with the measure, raising questions about its effectiveness.

In the trial, featuring a Labrador retriever and a beagle, the sniffer dogs were supposed to sit and stay on the spot when they detect dangerous substances by smell, but they failed to take the required actions quickly enough.

Especially, the beagle seemed restless, seeking attention from a trainer.
