LDP Eyes Measures to Up "Wagyu" Production, Help Small Farmers

Tokyo, Dec. 4 (Jiji Press)--Liberal Democratic Party teams Wednesday approved draft measures to increase "wagyu" beef production and support for small farmers before the Japan-U.S. trade agreement takes effect next month.

The measures are included in a draft revision to the ruling party's policy guidelines for measures to ease the impact of free trade deals on domestic industries. The teams adopted the draft revision Wednesday, when the Diet, Japan's parliament, approved the trade agreement.

"We included necessary measures" in the draft, said Hiroshi Moriyama, head of the LDP headquarters for trade agreements.

He said that "about 325 billion yen" will be booked for the agriculture sector in the forthcoming fiscal 2019 supplementary budget.

According to the draft guidelines, financial incentives will be provided to farmers if they increase the number of livestock cattle, as beef exports and domestic consumption are expected to grow.
