Tokyo, Dec. 6 (Jiji Press)--Supermarket operators Ito-Yokado Co. and York Mart Co., both units of Seven & i Holdings Co. <3382>, will not open 51 stores on Jan. 1, 2020, in a move to improve the work environment for their employees.

To be closed are more than 20 pct of some 240 stores they operate in total. It is the first time for the two retailers to close multiple stores on New Year's Day.

The 51 supermarkets are mostly in the Kanto eastern Japan region, including Tokyo, according to Thursday's announcement by Seven & i. Of the stores, 16 are of Ito-Yokado and 35 are of York Mart.

Seven & i said the group hopes to close more stores on New Year's Day in the future as part of its work-style reform efforts, but after hearing customer feedback.

In recent years, more and more supermarkets in Japan have decided not to open on New Year's Day. Among convenience store chains, Lawson Inc. <2651> will close about 100 outlets on the next New Year's Day on a trial basis.
