Tokyo, Dec. 11 (Jiji Press)--Major convenience store operator Seven-Eleven Japan Co. will conduct test closures of a total of some 50 directly run and franchise stores in Tokyo on Jan. 1, 2020, company officials said Wednesday.

Details will be set later. The unit of retail giant Seven & i Holdings Co. <3382> will consider whether to formally introduce a New Year's Day closure system based on the outcome of the test, according to the officials.

"We want to figure out how much impact the closure will have on sales," one official said.

Among rivals, Lawson Inc. <2651> is set to close about 100 outlets on Jan. 1 on a trial basis. FamilyMart Co. <8028> has no such plan.

The moves by Seven-Eleven Japan and Lawson come as the convenience store industry faces severe labor shortages.
