Tokyo, Sept. 8 (Jiji Press)--Nearly half of lawmakers from Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party had some sort of tie to the religious group formerly known as the Unification Church, the LDP said Thursday.

The LDP said that 179 of its 379 lawmakers had links to the religious group or related organizations.

The party disclosed the names of 121 of them, including policy chief Koichi Hagiuda, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihiko Isozaki and economic revitalization minister Daishiro Yamagiwa.

"We've taken the results seriously," Prime Minister and LDP President Fumio Kishida told reporters.

He said, "We'll make banning ties with groups considered problematic the party's basic policy, so as not to trigger the public's mistrust." He added, "We'll thoroughly implement this policy."
