Japan's Diet to Start Special Session on Feb. 18

Tokyo, Feb. 10 (Jiji Press)--The Diet, Japan's parliament, will hold a special session from Feb. 18 through July 17, Hiroshi Kajiyama, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's Diet affairs chief, said Tuesday.

Kajiyama unveiled the plan at a meeting with his counterparts from the major opposition Centrist Reform Alliance.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is expected to be re-elected on the first day of the 150-day session, after her LDP won a landslide victory in Sunday's election for the House of Representatives, the all-important lower Diet chamber.

Takaichi and her foreign, finance and economy ministers are set to deliver policy speeches on Feb. 20.

The Diet has not yet started deliberations on the government's budget for fiscal 2026, which begins in April, because of the election, making it unlikely for it to pass by March 31. The government intends to compile a provisional budget.
