• The Gods of Japanese Myths and Legends

Japanese mythology and folklore set down in the Kojiki, Nihon shoki, and other ancient chronicles describe Japan’s yaoyorozu no kami—all the diverse, countless gods throughout the country. Shintō shrines and temples are dedicated to different deities, each with their own “specialty,” drawing visitors who come to pray for health or happiness, or to seek divine assistance in matters like love, work, and family. How much do people know about these deities, though? This series looks at the origins and characteristics of Japan’s myriad kami.
