Photographer’s comments: The mouth of the river is in Naha port, where boats from China and other countries around Asia used to come to trade during the days when the Ryūkyū Islands were an independent kingdom. Mangrove forests fill the areas of brackish water where freshwater and saltwater mix.
River data: The river starts from a mountain stream in Mt. Untamamui in Yonabaru, flowing west across the south of Okinawa’s main island through the city of Naha into the East China Sea. Length: 11km. (There are no grade-one rivers in Okinawa.)
