Tokyo, Aug. 23 (Jiji Press)--A major earthquake occurred in Ibaraki Prefecture early Sunday morning, rocking eastern Japan areas including Tokyo.

The quake with an estimated magnitude of 5.9 occurred in southern Ibaraki at a depth of some 70 kilometers around 2 a.m., recording a seismic intensity of lower 5, the fifth-highest level on the Japanese scale, in some areas in the prefectures of Ibaraki, Saitama and Chiba as well as in Tokyo.

Among the areas are the Ibaraki city of Omitama, the Saitama city of Omiya, the Chiba city of Urayasu and Tokyo's Adachi Ward.
