4 Killed, 6 Missing in Heavy Rain in Eastern Japan

Tokyo, Sept. 22 (Jiji Press)--A total of four people have been confirmed dead in the eastern Japan prefectures of Kanagawa and Chiba by 11 a.m. Tuesday, due partly to landslides caused by heavy rain from Typhoon Dujuan, the 25th typhoon of the year, according to authorities.

Six other people are missing in the prefectures, both adjacent to Tokyo.

The Kanagawa and Chiba prefectural governments asked for the dispatch of Self-Defense Forces units, and are searching for the missing people in cooperation with police officers and firefighters.

In the Kanagawa city of Yokosuka, a landslide crushed a house shortly before 2 p.m. Monday. A resident in her 60s was found from the collapsed house by firefighters around 9:30 p.m. the same day, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mud flowed into housing in Yokosuka and the neighboring Kanagawa city of Miura, and a couple in their 70s in Yokosuka and two women in Miura, one in her 20s and the other in her 30s, went missing.
